Board of Trustees

Margaret Stern – Chair and CEO, has been interested in brain neurological diseases for over 30 years, originally through Huntington’s Disease, then Alzheimer’s, for which she served on the board of the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Disease Research Foundation.  She has served on the board of The Michael Stern Parkinson’s Research Foundation since 2008.  Ms. Stern’s career was in marketing and public relations.  In 1990 she founded Margaret Stern Communications, Inc. to provide specialized communications and marketing programs, primarily for international clients.  Prior to founding her own company, she was vice president director of external affairs/public relations for the Buckingham Wile, Seagram Wine, Wine Spectrum (Coca-Cola) and Schieffelin Companies as well as brand manager at Schieffelin and vice president director of marketing at Frederick Wildman & Sons (Hiram Walker-Allied Vintners).  She is fluent in English, Italian and French.


Dr. Paul Greengard – Vice Chair, is the Vincent Astor Professor of Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience at The Rockefeller University and Director of The Stern Center for Parkinson’s Research and the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Disease. Dr. Greengard received his Ph.D. in biophysics from The Johns Hopkins University in 1953. Before joining Rockefeller in 1983 as a Vincent Astor Professor and head of laboratory, he was director of biochemical research at the Geigy Research Laboratories and a professor of pharmacology and psychiatry at Yale University.Dr. Greengard is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Among his many awards and honors are the Gold Medal of the Karolinska Institute, the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, the 1997 Charles A. Dana Award for Pioneering Achievements in Health and the 1991 NAS Award in the Neurosciences. Dr. Greengard has authored over 1000 scientific publications.


William B. Dunham –Trustee and Secretary, is the owner and manager of real estate interests in New York City as well as heading a separate company that manages real estate for foreign investors.  Earlier, Dunham was a consultant with Axel Johnson & Co., a Swedish owned U.S. industrial complex, where he held a number of human resources and administrative positions.  Prior to that he was Vice President of Administration at the Wall Street firm G.H. Walker Laird Inc., he was employed at Brown Brothers Harriman  & Co., and at the American Overseas Petroleum Co., which included a two-year assignment in Libya.  He is a board member of the Webster Apartments, a not-for-profit 350-unit residence for working women and a member of its executive committee.  Dunham received his B.A. in Economics from Harvard and lives in New York City with his wife Sonya.


Wayne L. Pines – Trustee, is an internationally-known author and consultant on healthcare media and FDA-related regulatory issues for the pharmaceutical and medical devices industries.  He specializes in regulatory strategy, medical advertising and promotion regulatory issues, crisis communications and media relations.  He is currently a consultant and serves as president of Healthcare and Regulatory Services at APCO Worldwide in Washington, D.C.  Earlier he served as executive vice president at Burson-Marsteller.  He spent ten years at the FDA, including four as associate commissioner for public affairs. Mr. Pines served as president of the Alliance for a Stronger FDA for five years and as chairman of the MedStar Research Institute for three years; he still serves on their boards.  Mr. Pines is the author or editor of a dozen books, is listed in Who’s Who in America and in 2004 was named Alumnus of the Year by the FDA.


George Ross – Trustee, serves as a director of several for-profit and non-profit organizations.  His career has led him through positions with companies as diverse as pharmaceuticals, technology, information systems, manufacturing, energy and other industries.  Mr. Ross is a director of Accura Pharmaceuticals; he was executive vice president, chief financial officer and a board member of Tier Technologies. Inc. when Tier went public.  He was a partner and investor at Capital Partners, a private equity firm where he served on multiple boards of directors.  Earlier he was a vice president, senior financial officer and director of various Axel Johnson, Inc. businesses and Aminoil USA, an RJ Reynolds (RJR) subsidiary, as well as in public accounting and consulting with Ernst & Ernst (now Ernst & Young).  Mr. Ross is a Certified Public Accountant and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and a Masters of Business Administration from The Ohio State University, Fisher School of Business.


Saralie Slonsky – Trustee, has been a strategic communications counselor for 25 years, assisting healthcare providers, pharmaceutical companies, and medical equipment manufacturers address a broad spectrum of corporate/marketing goals.  As executive vice president of two major public relations agencies, she led the development of pioneering programs to influence stakeholders and manage issues. She currently serves on the boards of Healthy Women, which advocates for women’s health and wellness, and the pharmaceutical industry trade publication Communiqué. She is also an adjunct professor at New York University.  Earlier, she was an industry liaison to the American Medical Association (AMA), and a consultant to the Lupus and American Kidney Foundations and Medic Alert.


Michael Stern, Jr. – Trustee, is an Attorney at Law and member of the Florida and New York State Bar. After a long career in newspaper publishing, with Newhouse Newspapers (publishers of New Orleans Times Picayune, the Cleveland Plain Dealer; Newark’s Star Ledger; Portland’s Oregonian and many others), he retired in 2005. He is a graduate of Syracuse University and received his law degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo.


George Stoeckert – Trustee, is president of D&B North America and a member of the company’s Global Leadership Team.  Earlier he was at Automatic Data Processing, Inc. for 17 years where for the last five years he was president of Employer Services International with businesses in more than 30 countries and solutions delivery in more than 40 countries.  He was also president of the largest division, Major Accounts Services Division, and had led several other ADP operating divisions as well as been responsible for ADP Canada.  Earlier, for 17 years, he held a number of senior positions at Ryder System, Inc. including president of the Insurance Management Services Division, service on the executive committee, and senior vice president of corporate development and strategy.  He began his career at Ryder System in mergers and acquisitions, and holds a bachelors degree from the University of Miami and an MBA from the University of Miami Graduate School of Business.


Honorary Trustees

Princess Grazia Borghese –Trustee, is married to Pierfrancesco Borghese, a leading member of the noble Borghese family. She designs jewelry for a high profile jewelry shop in Rome. She is very active in charitable affairs, including the religious foundation of Nostra Signora del Buon Consiglio for the construction of hospitals for the poor.

Hon. Betsy Gotbaum – Trustee, is Public Advocate of New York City. Elected first in 2001 and then again in 2005, she has been a longtime civic leader, and an advisor to three mayors. She is a trained teacher, has been the commissioner of the Dept. of Parks & Recreation and president of the New York Historical Society. In the 1980s she served as the Executive Director of the New York Police Foundation. She received a B.A. from George Washington University, and a Master’s from Columbia University’s Teacher’s College.

Hon. Carolyn Maloney – Trustee, has served the City of New York since 1982; for ten years on the New York City Council, and as of 1993, in the U.S. House of Representatives for New York’s 14th district, as the first woman to ever represent that district. She is chair of the Committee on Financial Services’ Financial Institutions Subcommittee; vice-chair of the Joint Economic Committee; founding member and co-chair of the Bicameral Congressional Caucus on Parkinson’s Disease, and is a senior member of the Committee on Government Reform and Oversight. Some of Rep. Maloney’s top priorities include campaign finance and government reform and support of women and families.
